Baseball: Roell's Career Day Leads Bison Past Lions

Drew VonScio, Student Assistant for Athletic Communications

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa – Bethany hit the road this afternoon for a non-conference matchup against Penn State-New Kensington. Led by Nick Roell's five hits, the Green and White comfortably knocked off the Lions 14-5.

Alec Berg got the offense started in the top of the first with a single to score Roell. The next inning then saw Roell single to left and drive in Devin Toothman.

In the fifth, Toothman singled to right and drove in a pair of runs, Derek Black and Luke Beatty. CJ Owens followed it up with a single of his own to score Roell as the Bison sat comfortably with a 7-0 lead.

The visitors' lead quickly grew as Riley Brendel's double plated Beatty and Owens in the sixth before Roell's double to right center in the seventh scored Cory Newman. Colton Stoneman singled to center to drive in Roell before Black's single plated two more in Owens and Stoneman. Berg capped off the inning with a fielder's choice as Beatty came in all the way from second.

After a five-run inning for Penn State-New Kensington in the bottom of the seventh, Owens responded in the top of the eighth with a two-run homerun that scored Stoneman. The long ball for Owens was his second of the year.

Kyle D'Angela got the start and went two innings where he struck out a pair of Lions. The bullpen polished the game off as they conceded five runs over the final seven innings. Logan Bennett highlighted the bullpen with three scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts.

The Bison return to conference play this Saturday when they stay on the road to take on Washington and Jefferson in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
