GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Bethany College men's wrestling team competed at the Glenville State Quad Match where they defeated Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) College by a final score of 30-29 and fell to the host Glenville State (W.Va.) University by a final score of 47-12 and Georgetown (Ky.) College by a final score of 39-10 at the Waco Center.
Bethany (2-2) had a tough day ahead of them at the Glenville State Quad with the Bison competing against two NCAA Division II programs and a solid opponent from the NAIA. The Green and White got things started against Glenville State (3-0) and Georgetown (1-1) before a showdown and come-from-behind win against Davis & Elkins (0-2).
Sophomore
Angelo Di Pol (Paulsboro, N.J.) and junior
Jonathan Braun (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) each went 3-0 on the day to lead the Bison. In the 125 matches,
Di Pol finished with three falls.
Braun scored two pins and a major decision at 174 including a vital fall against the Senators to bring the Bison within five and ultimately leading to a Bethany victory.
In a do or die situation after falling in four straight matches to Davis & Elkins, the Bison needed two pins in each of the final two matches to earn the win against the Senators. Freshman 197-pounder
Jackson Hodges (Fairfield, Ohio/Hamilton) was up first and recorded a takedown before securing a 1:15 fall setting up one last shot for the Green and White. Graduate heavyweight
Zach Kuneff (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Bridgeport) was the deciding factor needing a tech fall to tie D&E and a pin to give the Bison an upset victory. Closing in on two minutes,
Kuneff pinned Aidan Maldonado to send the Bison back to Bethany on a high note.
Freshman 125-pounder
Harrison Spadoni (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) was the only other Bison to earn a victory on the day after a 2:38 exhibition fall against Georgetown.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday, December 6 as they travel to Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern University in a non-conference dual at 9 a.m. at the ONU Sports Center.
