Women's Wrestling Sweeps DIII Competition at JCU Duals

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - The Bethany College women's wrestling team competed at the JCU Duals hosted by John-Carroll (Ohio) University where they went 3-1 at the Athletic, Wellness & Events Center.

Bethany (8-2) took three of four duals after opening the day with a tough NCAA Division II D'Youville (N.Y.) University (4-3) squad that has two nationally ranked wrestlers on its roster. Both teams were tied heading into the final match, but the Saints pulled out the victory while the Bison bounced back with victories in their duals against Alfred State (N.Y.) College (1-3), John-Carroll (3-1), and Buffalo State (N.Y.) University (0-2).

Against the Saints, freshman 117-pounder Taelor Rae Busch (Omaha, Neb./Mercy) gave the Bison a much-needed early lead with a 1:54 fall following a D'Youville forfeit. Despite dropping the next two matches, the Bison got some points back with a forfeit victory at 138 and earned a point in the team's 124 and 160 matches to stay in the dual. No. 20 nationally ranked 180-pounder Trinity Barrus (Hysham, Mont.) tied things up with a quick pin setting up a winner-take-all heavyweight matchup where the Saints would secure a pin and the victory.

Searching for their first win of the day, the Green and White took an early 10-0 lead over Alfred State before winning six straight matches to blow out the Pioneers. Busch won the Bison's first match thanks to a medical forfeit while sophomore Angelina Watson (Lindenwold, N.J.) earned an 11-0 tech fall at 124 to put the Bison up 19-0.

At 131, freshman Rose Mary Dodd (Lake Elsinore, Calif./Temescal Canyon) had one of her toughest matches of the year but still pummeled the opposition with a 13-4 decision victory. Freshman Ari Tyson (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and sophomore Jasmine Craddock (Chesterfield, Va./Thomas Dale) each won by tech fall in the 138 match and the 145 match, respectively, and sophomore Shanielah Kirk (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) earned the first Bison pin of the dual in just over a minute into the match. Freshman MyJanniea Baptist (Los Angeles, Calif./Lawndale) capped off the dual with a 59 second pin to give Bethany the 40-6 victory.

Bethany had another tough match on their hands against the host John-Carroll, but wasted no time winning two matches by fall thanks to freshman 110-pounder Ashley Campbell (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and Busch in the 117 match. The Bison dropped the next match, but that was followed again by back-to-back pins from Dodd and Tyson. Kirk's fall at 160 padded the Bethany lead and a forfeit in the 207 match improved the Bison to 33-16 in the dual and to 2-1 on the day.

The Green and White's dual against Buffalo State was highlighted by another victory by Campbell with a 11-0 tech fall, Busch's fourth win and third pin of the day, and a 1:44 fall by Baptist to beat the Bengals 44-5.

The Bison are back in action on Thursday, December 11 as they host Penn State University-Altoona in a non-conference dual at 6 p.m. on Joe Kurey Memorial Court inside Hummel Fieldhouse.
