The Bethany College softball team ran the best start in school history to 15 consecutive wins before falling in the second game of the nightcap to Capital University in non-conference action Tuesday.
GAME ONE: BETHANY 5, CAPITAL 2
Graduate Destiny Goodnight scored four times as the Bison tallied the game one victory. She was 2-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases to be the catalyst for the Bethany offense.
While Goodnight was causing havoc on the bases, fifth-year Josie Wise (9-0) scattered 10 hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
Both teams scored single runs in the first inning, and the Comets took the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Instead of simply getting the run back, Bethany took the lead with a pair of runs as graduate Morgan Huey doubled home Goodnight and then scored on a junior Brooke Markland RBI groundout.
Bethany added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Huey finished 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI, while freshman Olivia Kidd and Markland each had two RBI.
GAME TWO: CAPITAL 9, BETHANY 0 (5 inn.)
Bethany managed just three hits in losing its first game of the season as Capital jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to the 9-0 win.
After scoring four runs in the first inning, Capital scored a run in the third inning and two runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Junior Katelyn Ziems (3-1) allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 14 hits with two strikeouts.
Bethany (15-1) returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference action 1 pm. Saturday, hosting Chatham.
