WINCHESTER, Va. – The Bison broke three indoor records at the Last Chance Qualifier. Despite bringing a limited squad, the Bethany men finished third among all teams competing.
Caliyph McClinton continues to peak, running his fastest time of his career. He once again broke the 60m record, taking first place and building his national presence. McClinton unofficially bursted the National Qualifier bubble with a 6.83 second sprint. If the time stands, McClinton will move onto the NCAA Championships.
Bison fans might have expected another record breaking performance from McClinton, but two of his teammates popped in their last chance qualifier.
Liam Gallagher and Alexander Blair both broke school records while competing in the heptathlon.
Gallagher broke the total points record, which combines finishes from all seven events. The events are a mix between the track and the field and consist of shot put, long jump, high jump, pole vault, 60 meter hurdles, a 1,000 meter run, and the 60m dash. Gallagher totaled 3,150 points, a mark that stands as the best performance in school history.
Blair was only six points behind Gallagher's total. A large part in Blair's high score was due to his record breaking time in the 1,000m run. He was the first to cross the finish line by nearly five seconds, finishing with a time of 2:44.09.
Dave Rene was among the outstanding Bison. The field athlete took first in the long jump by a full foot. He leaped 6.61 meters.
Bison fans everywhere will have to wait patiently for the final results to come in across the country to see if McClinton will qualify for the NCAA Championships. If he does, Bethany will travel to the Indoor Championships next Friday.
