WOOSTER, Ohio – The Bethany baseball team traveled for a non-conference game against the Wooster College FIghting Scots. Bethany pieced together some scrappy runs, but ultimately fell in the nine inning affair.
It was a small-ball type game all around. In the third, Bethany capitalized on the leadoff reaching base on an error. A single by Chad Behrendt and a sacrifice pushed Payton Zupko to third base. Jaden Nesto-Fox earned an RBI, and heads up baserunning by Behrendt saw the Bison take a 2-1 lead on an errand throw.
Tyler McKee was hit by a pitch in the next inning, and stole second to show his discontent. Zupko came through with an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game for the Bison.
The Bison were cruising until the bottom of the sixth when the Fighting Scots put together a two out rally bringing home three runs. They scored again in the seventh inning to make it a multi-run game.
Gian DeGenova got the bats started in the eighth with a double down the line. Senior Riley Brendel poked a single through to score DeGenova, reducing the deficit to one. McKee singled to put the tying run in scoring position with one out, but the Bison offense couldn't find grass to bring him home.
Bethany will host their first doubleheader on their brand new field this Tuesday. It will be a non-conference series against Penn State Altoona. First pitch is set to be at 1 p.m.
