WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Bethany College men's wrestling team defeated Waynesburg (Pa.) University by a final score of 36-21 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener in Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Bethany (3-2, 1-0 PAC) competed in their first conference dual after a 30+-year hiatus for the program where the Bison and Waynesburg (1-7, 0-3 PAC) split the four wrestled bouts. However, a short-handed Yellow Jackets squad gifted Bethany with its first PAC victory of the season.
After a a forfeit victory for each team in the first two classes, freshman
Aván Rosado (Florence, S.C./South Florence) got the first win of the day for the Bison with a pin of just under a minute against Waynesburg's Braydon Barabo in the 141-match.
Freshman 149-pounder
Jeremiah Stalling (Buckeye, Ariz./Buckeye Union) made it back-to-back victories for the Green and White with a 2:40 fall over the Yellow Jackets' JT Hollyfield as both traded blows for nearly the entire first period.
The 174 bout posed two of the best wrestlers in the PAC against each other as it featured the Bison's
Jonathan Braun (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) and Waynesburg's Jessie Orbin. The two went back and forth deep into the second period, but Orbin would come out on top with a pin.
Graduate
Zach Kuneff (Martins Ferry, Ohio/Bridgeport) then started strong in the heavyweight match and fell in a close 4-0 decision, but the Bison would still secure the 36-21 team victory.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday, January 17 as they travel to Washington, Pennsylvania to compete in the Jim White Duals hosted by Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College at 11 a.m. in Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
