Baseball Combines for 15 Runs to Complete Four-Game Sweep of Penn State-Beaver

BETHANY, W.Va. - The Bethany College baseball team swept Penn State University-Beaver in a non-conference doubleheader by final scores of 8-0 and 7-1 at Bethany Park.

Game 1
Scoring Plays
  • Bottom 1st - Junior first baseman Gian DeGenova (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) started the day off with a sac fly for an early run
  • Bottom 1st - Senior center fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) stayed hot at the plate with an RBI double
  • Bottom 3rd - Senior second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) brought another run around thanks to an RBI double
  • Bottom 3rd - DeGenova made it back-to-back-to-back doubles for the Bison
  • Bottom 3rd - Freshman left fielder Matthew Stathos (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) collected his first career RBI with a two-run double with the bases loaded
  • Bottom 3rd - Senior catcher Payton Davis (Canton, Ohio/Malvern) continued the inning by bringing in a run on his base hit
  • Bottom 3rd - Junior third baseman Evan Hegarty (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) sacrifice fly closed a six-run third for the Green and White
On the Mound
  • Senior right-hander Payton Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) got his first start of the year as he went five innings striking out eight and allowing only three hits on his way to the winning decision
  • Junior left-hander Tristan Simrau (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West) and sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) pitched the sixth and seventh, respectively, where they each limited PSU-Beaver to two hits

Scoring Plays
  • Bottom 1st - Two Lion miscues in the same play gifted the Bison with two early runs
  • Bottom 2nd - Senior All-PAC right fielder Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) earned his first RBI of the day with a single to extend the lead
  • Bottom 2nd - Nestor-Fox grounded out to first, but it was enough to bring in Hegarty from third
  • Bottom 2nd - DeGenova drove in another run with an RBI base hit
  • Bottom 3rd - Freshman catcher Kolton Smittle (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored on a Lion wild pitch
  • Bottom 6th - DeGenova added another sac fly to pad the Bison lead
On the Mound
  • Freshman left-hander and PAC Newcomer of the Week Noah Stonerock (Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) picked up his second win of the year behind four innings where he did not allow an earned run and struck out four of his 17 batters
  • Freshman right-hander Landon Holley (Cecil, Pa./Canon-McMillan) struck out two through two innings of work and allowed only one hit
  • Freshman left-hander Dominic Kempton (Dillonvale, Ohio/Buckeye Local) made his Green and White debut in the seventh where he gave up only one hit
The Bison are back in action Sunday, March 8 as they travel to Auburndale, Florida to open the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by taking on Drew (N.J.) University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 10:45 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
