BETHANY, W.Va. - The Bethany College baseball team took on Thiel (Pa.) College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader where they won the first game by a final score of 8-5 and lost the second by a final score of 6-3 at Bethany Park.
Game 1
At the Plate
- Senior left fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) went 3-for-5 including a go-ahead three-run homer to finish with three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base
- Senior designated hitter Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) also collected three hits with an RBI single in the third innings
- Senior Academic All-PAC first baseman Ethan McHugh (Brilliant, Ohio/Buckeye Local) knocked a base hit in each of his two at-bats and also laid down a sac bunt
- Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) added an insurance run on a sac fly after Bethany took the lead
- Senior catcher Payton Davis (Canton, Ohio/Malvern) drove in another Bison run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch
- Junior Academic All-PAC third baseman Gian DeGenova (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) and freshman right fielder Matthew Stathos (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) each went 1-for-4 with an RBI single
On the Mound
- Senior right-hander Payton Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) got the win after allowing only one earned run in seven innings as he struck out six Tomcats and surrendered only five hits and three walks
- Sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) tossed two scoreless innings of relief where he had one strikeout and got his second save of the year
Game 2
At the Plate
- Sophomore center fielder Niko Heidt (San Diego, Calif./Monte Vista) stole two bases and went 2-for-3 while also drawing a bases-loaded walk for one RBI
- Junior shortstop Evan Hegarty (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) also had two hits for the Bison offense
- McHugh went a career-best 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI single while also swiping one bag
- Gonzalez tallied the Bison's last hit of Game 2
- Nestor-Fox drove in a run thanks to a bases-loaded groundout
On the Mound
- Gonzalez pitched eight innings where he gave up only two earned runs on five hits and one walk while fanning six batters
- Freshman right-hander Dominic Fry (Caldwell, Ohio) faced five batters in the ninth where he allowed two runs on two hits and a walk
The Bison are back in action Sunday, March 29 as they travel to New Concord, Ohio to take on Muskingum (Ohio) University in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. on Mose Morehead Field.
