NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Bethany College baseball team took on Grove City (Pa.) College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader where they lost the first game by a final score of 4-3 and won the second by a final score of 13-9 at R. Jack Behringer Field.
Game 1
At the Plate
- Junior shortstop Evan Hegarty (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) went 2-for-4 with two base hits
- Senior left fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) also collected two hits along with one run scored and one stolen base
- Sophomore center fielder Niko Heidt (San Diego, Calif./Monte Vista) and senior All-PAC right fielder Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) each drove in another run with an RBI single
- Freshman catcher Kolton Smittle (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded an RBI thanks to a two-out double to open the scoring
- Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) provided the last hit for the Bison
On the Mound
- Freshman left-hander Noah Stonerock (Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) had another quality outing where he went seven and a third holding the Wolverines to three runs on five hits while striking out four batters
- Senior right-hander Payton Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) finished the seventh and pitched into extras where he fanned four and surrendered one run on six hits
Game 2
At the Plate
- Sophomore right fielder Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) stayed hot at the dish finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and a stolen base
- Heidt continued his offensive tear by lifting his first career homer as part of his multi-hit game
- Nestor-Fox went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI
- Toothman also drove in three RBI with two hits in his four at-bats
- Peluchette added an insurance run thanks to an eighth-inning sac fly
On the Mound
- Peluchette got the start and held Grove City to three earned runs over five innings where he struck out four batters
- Sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) opened the sixth and freshman right-hander Dominic Fry (Caldwell, Ohio) slammed the door with some help from a five-run eighth inning to earn his first collegiate victory
The Bison are back in action Saturday, April 25 as they host Senior Day and a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio) beginning at 1 p.m. at Bethany Park.
