Baseball Storms Back in Walk-Off Extras Win Over Wooster

BETHANY, W.Va. - The Bethany College baseball team defeated The College of Wooster (Ohio) in a non-conference game by a final score of 7-6 at Bethany Park. 

Scoring Plays
  • Bottom 6th - Junior Academic All-PAC third baseman Gian DeGenova (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) put the Bison on the board with a two-run single with the team's third straight hit
  • Bottom 6th - Freshman right fielder Matthew Stathos (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) drew the bases-loaded walk to pull Bethany within one
  • Bottom 9th - Sophomore center fielder Niko Heidt (San Diego, Calif./Monte Vista) fell a foot short of ending the game with a walk-off grand slam but was able to drive in two with a stand-up double
  • Bottom 9th - Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) forced extras on an RBI groundout
  • Bottom 12th - Senior All-PAC designated hitter Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) sent everybody home with a bases-loaded single 
At the Plate
  • Heidt finished with two hits and two RBI
  • Nestor-Fox and Peluchette each added two hits and drove in one run
  • DeGenova also brought in two runs and had one of Bethany's nine hits
  • Stathos notched his fifth RBI of the year
  • Sophomore Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) and freshman Kolton Smittle (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) each supplied back-to-back pinch-hit singles in the ninth
On the Mound
  • Freshman left-hander Dominic Kempton (Dillonvale, Ohio/Buckeye Local) tossed two innings in his second start where he escaped two early jams leaving with two runs allowed on two hits and three walks
  • Sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) also tossed two innings surrendering only one run on three hits
  • Junior left-hander Tristan Simrau (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West) had another solid outing after holding the Fighting Scots to one run and five hits through three innings while adding a punchout
  • Freshman right-hander Chris Stathos (Batavia, Ohio/West Clermont) only gave up one earned run in the eighth and had one strikeout
  • Freshman right-hander Dominick Bombardiere (Clarksburg, W.Va./Notre Dame) carved up the Wooster lineup from the ninth inning on as he allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out two in his first career win
The Bison close the 2026 regular season on Friday, May 1 as they host a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College beginning at 1 p.m. at Bethany Park.
