Women's Lacrosse: Fast start propels Bison past Royals

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College women's lacrosse held their home opener against Eastern Mennonite University on Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium, Saturday afternoon. Cassidy Mailloux's four goals paced the Bison to a 12-4 victory over the Royals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Abbie Carpenter found the back of the net first for the Bison while the Bison were down a player. Eastern Mennonite answered a few minutes later to knot the game up at 1-1.
  • The Bison quickly regained the lead and never trailed again after Cassidy Mailloux fired in two goals and Karley Trinidad added one. The Bison led 4-1 after the first period.
  • Momentum remained in the Bison's favor in period two. Mailloux scored two goals to extend the lead 6-1. Abbie Carpenter and Jada Carter both got in on the action as the Bison led 8-1 heading into the half.
  • Scoring in the third slowed down for the Bison. Lexie Reid scored her first goal of the season with 5:25 to go and Eastern Mennonite's Grace Hughes scored with under a minute to go.
  • The Bison scored three goals in the fourth to swell their lead to 12-2. The Royals tacked on two goals but the Bison remained in control to seal the win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Bison outshot the Royals, 37-16.
  • The Royals had 40 turnovers, while the Bison had 27. The Bison caused 20 of the Royals turnovers.
  • Both teams struggled on free position shots. Bethany went 2-for-7 while Eastern Mennonite went 0-for-8.

Bethany returns to the turf on Sunday, Feb. 26 when they host Anderson (Ind.) at noon on Don Ault Field at Bison Stadium.
