The Bethany College women's soccer team took on Penn State-Altoona at historic Hoag Field for their first game of the season. An explosive second-half offense led the Bison to a 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX
-
Although the first half was a scoreless affair, the Bison offense was working hard. They had 11 shots with six of them being on goal.
-
The defense was equally as strong, allowing only one shot on goal before halftime.
-
The offense continued to pour on the pressure after retaking the field. Their first goal came at the 55 minute mark. Brionna Bash broke down the center of the field, weaved through two defenders, and took an open shot that would find the back of the net.
-
The defense continued to play a solid game, but the Lady Lions lined up a perfect arced shot on a long free kick that tied the game at one a piece with only 10 minutes to go.
-
Bethany's consistency in controlling the ball near the opponents goal proved to be valuable late in the game. The Bison earned a free kick near the player's sideline with under four minutes remaining. Being close to the corner, the Green and White lined up as if it were a corner kick. Jordan Palmer sailed the ball to the opposite side of the net where Monica Bird hooked it into the bottom corner for a go-ahead Bison goal.
-
Avallina Aurillo caught PSU-Altoona going all out on offense less than two minutes later to give Bethany another goal that would be converted to a 3-1 victory.
-
The Bethany offense outshot their opponents 24-8 with a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.
-
Interim Head Coach Cody Kibler earned his first career head coaching victory as a Bison and NCAA Head Coach.
Bethany (1-0) will travel to Mount Aloysius College (0-1) for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, September 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
