MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Bethany College men's lacrosse team almost pulled off an upset of unbeaten Mount Vernon Nazarene, but the Cougars scored eight of nine fourth-quarter goals to secure the 13-9 non-conference victory.
Junior Cameron Russo was pivotal as the Bison took a lead into the final quarter. He registered three assists and one goal as Bethany turned a one-goal deficit into a three-goal lead. He finished with two goals and four assists.
Mount Vernon Nazarene took advantage of three power-play opportunities and scored fifth straight goals to take a two-goal fourth quarter lead. Russo assisted freshman Chance Funari to get BC to within one, but the Cougars tallied three consecutive markers to seal the win.
Bethany got off to a quick start with a pair of goals, and after MVNU tallied its lone first-quarter goal, the Bison answered to take the lead after one. The Cougars tallied the only goals in the second period.
Other than Russo, Funari was the lone Bison with multiple goals – scoring twice.
Bethany (2-5) returns to action 1 p.m. March 22, traveling to Pitt-Bradford.
