GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Bethany College softball team outhit Allegheny and had the tying run in scoring with position with no outs in the seventh inning but fell to the Gators 3-2 Thursday in the opening game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament at College Field on the campus of Grove City College.
A leaping grab by the shortstop secured the final out and keeping the tying run from crossing the board.
Allegheny got off to the early lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and then added another run in the third inning.
The Gators were on the cusp of tacking on more runs as the first two batters reached in the bottom of fifth inning. However, sophomore Victoria Wehrberger slammed the door – keeping the Gators from adding insurance runs. Wehrberger struck out three over two innings without allowing a hit.
Bethany pushed another run across the board in the sixth on a junior Brooke Markland double.
Fifth-year Josie Wise (17-6) allowed three earned runs on five hits over four innings with six strikeouts.
Bethany (26-12-1) plays Thiel noon Friday in an elimination game.
