Peluchette Tosses Complete Game, Baseball Takes Two from Penn State-Beaver

BETHANY, W.Va. - The Bethany College baseball team swept Penn State University-Beaver in a non-conference doubleheader by final scores of 3-0 and 9-4 at Bethany Park.

Game 1
Scoring Plays
  • Bottom 1st -  Senior left fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) got the scoring started with an RBI double to left
  • Bottom 5th -  Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) added an insurance run for the Green and White with a double down the line
  • Bottom 6th - Junior third baseman Evan Hegarty (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) padded the lead with another RBI double
On the Mound
  • Senior All-PAC right-hander Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) tossed the first complete game of the season by tying a career-high eight strikeouts allowing only five hits on his way to the shutout victory

Scoring Plays
  • Bottom 1st - Sophomore right-hander Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) earned a base knock to put Bethany on the board
  • Bottom 3rd - Toothman continued his big day with a sac fly to even the score at two
  • Bottom 3rd - Junior first baseman Austin Samanske (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) drove in his first RBI as a Bison with a single up the middle to give Bethany the lead
  • Bottom 3rd - Freshman catcher Kolton Smittle (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) blew the game open with a three-run tank to put the Green and White up 6-2
  • Bottom 4th - Samanske put the ball in play to bring home another run
  • Bottom 5th - Nestor-Fox scored on a Lion wild pitch
  • Bottom 6th - Samanske's sac fly on the infield was enough to drive in his third RBI of the day
On the Mound
  • Gonzalez improved to 2-0 after pitching six innings where he had nine strikeouts and limited the Lions to two runs on four hits and a walk
  • Freshman right-hander Dominic Fry (Caldwell, Ohio) made his collegiate debut as he pitched the seventh and struck out three batters and allowed only one earned run
The Bison are back in action Saturday, February 28 as they take on Penn State University-Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Bethany Park.
