Baseball Reaches 20 Wins for First Time in Seven Years with Westminster Split

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Bethany College baseball team took on Westminster (Pa.) College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader where they won the first game by a final score of 5-3 and lost the second by a final score of 6-1 at the Westminster Baseball Field.

Game 1
At the Plate
  • Junior Academic All-PAC third baseman Gian DeGenova (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) went a team-best 3-for-4 with one run scored
  • Sophomore designated hitter Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) hit the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth to secure the victory for the Green and White
  • Sophomore center fielder Niko Heidt (San Diego, Calif./Monte Vista) had two doubles with one RBI to open the scoring in the first
  • Senior catcher Payton Davis (Canton, Ohio/Malvern) added an RBI double to extend the Bethany lead
  • Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) stayed hot with two hits against the Titans
  • Senior left fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) and freshman right fielder Brance McCune (Morgantown, W.Va./University) each added a hit for the Bison
On the Mound
  • Senior right-hander Payton Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) had another quality outing where he pitched seven innings and held the Titans to two earned runs on four hits while also fanning four batters
  • Senior All-PAC right-hander Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) slammed the door on Westminster over the final two innings where he gave up only one hit and had one strikeout on the way to his fourth victory of the season
Game 2
At the Plate
  • Gonzalez drove in the only run of the game with an RBI groundout
  • Heidt and DeGenova each went 1-for-3 to lead the Bethany offense
  • Nestor-Fox had a hit and scored for the Bison
On the Mound
  • Gonzalez got the start and limited Westminster to four runs on four hits and three walks across five innings while striking out two batters
  • Sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) struck out one and only gave up one earned run on three hits and one walk
The Bison are back in action Monday, April 20 as they host a non-conference game against Muskingum (Ohio) University at 4 p.m. at Bethany Park.
