Baseball Stings Waynesburg in Doubleheader Sweep

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Bethany College baseball team swept Waynesburg (Pa.) University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader by final scores of 12-7 and 12-4 at the Waynesburg Baseball & Softball Complex.

Game 1
At the Plate
  • Freshman right fielder Brance McCune (Morgantown, W.Va./University) went a career-best 4-for-4 including a double and two RBI
  • Senior All-PAC second baseman Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio) also notched four hits and drove in five RBI which is the most in his Green and White career finishing with a triple, three singles, and a stolen base
  • Senior left fielder Devin Toothman (East Liverpool, Ohio) recorded his ninth multi-hit game of the season with two singles and a double
  • Sophomore center fielder Niko Heidt (San Diego, Calif./Monte Vista) was the fourth Bison with two or more hits and tied a team-high three runs scored
  • Junior Academic All-PAC third baseman Gian DeGenova (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) also drove in two RBI thanks to his team-leading fifth and sixth sac flies of the year
  • Senior catcher Payton Davis (Canton, Ohio/Malvern), senior Academic All-PAC first baseman Ethan McHugh (Brilliant, Ohio/Buckeye Local), and sophomore designated hitter Marco Gonzalez (Oviedo, Fla.) each added a base hit and an RBI
On the Mound
  • Senior All-PAC right-hander Sonny Peluchette (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) tossed four innings in his first game back from injury where he held the Yellow Jackets to one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters
  • Freshman right-hander Dominic Fry (Caldwell, Ohio) opened the fifth where he faced six batters while sophomore right-hander Billy Sloan (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) closed the inning and pitched four more shutout frames with two strikeouts to get the win
Game 2
At the Plate
  • Freshman catcher Kolton Smittle (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) went 2-for-3 and scored one run
  • Sophomore shortstop Evan Hegarty (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) added a double and two RBI for the Bison
  • Senior center fielder Payton Zupko (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) drove in two runs with a double in the top of the ninth and then stole one base
  • Sophomore third baseman Jacob Holliday (Groveport, Ohio/Madison Christian) recorded his first career RBI with a base hit to extend the Bethany lead
  • Toothman made it two straight games with three hits and did so by tallying two triples and a homer for 10 total bases
  • Nestor-Fox and McHugh contributed two more hits with two RBI and one RBI, respectively
On the Mound
  • Freshman left-hander Noah Stonerock (Circleville, Ohio/Westfall) improved to 2-0 in conference play after allowing only one run on four hits with a career-high seven strikeouts through seven innings
  • Junior left-hander Tristan Simrau (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West) came on in relief where he pitched the eighth and ninth giving up only two earned runs on five hits
The Bison are back in action Saturday, April 11 as they host a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Geneva (Pa.) College beginning at 1 p.m. at Bethany Park.
