Sept. 7- ALLIANCE, Ohio- Arkangelo James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored his fourth career hat trick and added two assists as the Bethany College men's soccer team (1-3) defeated Keystone College (0-3), 7-0, in an opening round match of the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday evening at Mount Union Stadium.
Freshman goalkeeper Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/ Maidstone Grammar School ) started in net for the Bison and recorded his first career win and shutout in the victory. Appleby recorded his first-career point in the game as he assisted on James' second goal of the game.
Bethany broke out of its offensive slump over the past three games and recorded a season-high 22 shots.
Head coach Sean Regan had this to say about the victory, "the team was down on themselves after starting the season off 0-3, but this victory should give us momentum for tomorrow and through the rest of the non-conference schedule."
James scored first of his three goals on the evening in the 26th minute of the opening frame as he took a pass from senior Dustin Maiolo (Stevensville, Ontario/St. Michael).
James netted the game's second goal in the 39th minute, and added his third goal to complete the hat-trick two minutes later.
Senior Lamine Balde (Guinea/William L. Sayre) netted his first goal of the season in the 61st minute, as he received a pass from James and fired it into the goal to extend the Bethany lead to 4-0.
Junior Nick Turner (Huntington, W.Va./St. Joseph Central Catholic) received a pass from James and fired it into the net in the 64th minute to give the Bison a 5-0 lead.
Freshman Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School) and Senior Adam Gibboney (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) each scored their first goal of the season in the 83rd and 88th minute respectively. Balde and Waters each added their third points of the match, as they were credited with assists. Balde assisted Waters goal and Waters was credited with an assist on Gibboney's goal.
Bethany advances to tomorrow's championship game to face the winner of Mount Union and Defiance at 3:00 p.m.
Offensively for the Bison, James had eight points (three goals and two assists), Balde and Waters had three points (one goal and one assist), Turner and Gibboney had two points (one goal) and Maiolo and Appleby had one point (one assist).
