Sept. 13 – Greensburg, Pa. – The Bethany College men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the 34th minute when Jeremy Niemiec found the night off a pass from Carmene Albano to give UPG a 1-0 lead. 14 minutes later, Pitt-Greensburg would extend the advantage to 2-0 on a goal by Matt Papinchak, and the Bison would find themselves down 2-0 heading into the halftime break.
In the second stanza, Bethany cut the lead to one goal in the 54th minute, when Ian Hayhurst (Fairmont, W.Va./East Fairmont) captured his first goal of his career. The goal came off a great touch pass from captain Jack Waters (Epsom, United Kingdom/Glyn School), and cut the Greensburg lead to 2-1.
However, the Bobcats would have an answer, scoring two goals off the foot of Craig McDonald. The first goal came in the 62nd minute, with the second goal scored in the 66th minute of play. The latter of the two put the Bison down 4-1, and they would fall by the same score.
Offensively, the Bison were led by Hayhurst and Waters. Hayhurst scored the lone goal for the Bison on his only shot of the day, and finished with two points. Water finished with one assist and one point in the game.
Defensively, sophomore Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone Grammar School) finished the contest with six total saves. He made two in the first half and four more in the second stanza.
The Bison will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Steubenville, Ohio for a contest with Franciscan University. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
