McHENRY, Md. - The Bison traveled to Maryland for their second consecutive open of the season. Bethany crowned two champions, putting on another respective showing as a team.
Bethany's first champion was
Jonathan Braun at 174 pounds. Braun ended every match early, picking up three falls and a tech en route to his crown. Out of four matches,
Braun only allowed one takedown. The final score of that match was 19-3 in the Bison's favor.
Zach Kuneff rounded out the tournament at heavyweight, but capped off the day in a big way. The graduate student started off strong with a first period fall. Then after giving up the first takedown in the semis,
Kuneff stormed back with a 12-5 decision to earn a spot in the finals.
In the finals,
Kuneff entered a chess match. No takedowns were scored throughout the entirety of regular time or the first overtime period. Kuneff was unable to keep his opponent down in the first tiebreaker, forcing his hand. Down one, the heavyweight needed an escape. With time ticking and less than five seconds on the clock,
Kuneff did better than an escape. He reversed his opponent, sealing the match and earning the crown of the open tournament.
The Bison will travel on Wednesday for their first ever dual meet. They'll take on Penn State Altoona following the women's wrestling freestyle dual.
