Men's Golf, Phillips Set Records and Place Second at Waynesburg Fall Invitational

BEALLSVILLE, Pa. - The Bethany College men's golf team competed at the Waynesburg Fall Invitational hosted by Waynesburg (Pa.) University at the Nemacolin Country Club.

Head Coach Kailey Pettit's squad had another day for the record books by setting a new program record with a 297 (+9) team score after breaking the previous team score record just two weeks ago. Three Bison finished within the Top-5 to lead the team with junior Samuel Phillips (Charleston, W.Va./Herbert Hoover) shooting a career-best round of 70 (-2) to finish second out of the 40-man field for his first career Top-5 finish while freshman Jacob Bursey (Winchester, Va./James Woods) placed right behind Phillips at third overall with a score of 71 (-1) after competing individually. Junior Payton Hildebrand (Wellsburg, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) also helped lead Bethany after finishing tied for fourth with a score of 74 (+2). Although the Bison were near flawless at this year's Invitational, Bethany's 297 team score finished second with Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University just edging out Coach Pettit's squad with a score of 296 (+8) for the top spot.

Also a part of the Bison's record-setting round was All-Presidents' Athletic Conference junior Jude Smith (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) who shot a 76 (+4) to tie for sixth overall, and a career-best for freshman Brayden Roberts (Franklin, Ky./Franklin-Simpson) who penciled in a 77 (+5) to tie for eleventh place.

Freshman Ian Longo (Winchester, Va./James Woods) and sophomore Cooper Poe (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) also shot a round of 85 (+13) for the Green and White while Nash Hays (Heath, Ohio) rounded out the Bethany competitors by carding an 87 (+15).

The Bison are back in action on Sunday, October 12 through Tuesday, October 14 as they travel to Vienna, Ohio to compete at the 2025 Presidents' Athletic Conference Fall Championships at Squaw Creek-Avalon Golf & Country Club.
