Britton Sets Program Record in Discus, Men's Track & Field Competes at John Homon Open

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Bethany College men's track and field team competed at the John Homon Open hosted by the University of Mount Union (Ohio) at Kehres Stadium.

The Bison earned three medals at the Open and leading the way was junior Jalen Britton (Fort Lee, Va./Prince George) who won the discus out of 46 athletes by throwing a 48.61 setting a new program record that has stood for 30 years all while beating out 18 NCAA Division II athletes. Britton also threw the hammer and the shot put where he notched marks of 33.64 and 11.39, respectively.

In the hammer throw, senior Koda Moore (Proctor, W.Va./John Marshall) led the Bison with a 44.54-meter toss to finish seventh out of 33 and also threw the shot put for Bethany. Sophomore Xavier Cole (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) had a team-best 11.54 mark in the shot put along with a distance of 31.06 in the discus followed by teammates Cyrus Brown (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville), Shonathan Desena (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area Senior), and Kevin Leach (Salisbury, N.C./West Rowan).

The Bison also earned two bronze medals thanks to freshman All-American Jason Ellman (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) who finished third in both the 200-meter dash and the long jump. Out of 68 sprinters, he ran the 200 in a time of 21.63 to take home third and then jumped a 7.17 in the long jump to finish third in that event as well. Ellman then helped the Bison 4x100 secure fourth place along with relay mates freshman Jamari Curlett (Erie, Pa./North East), freshman Ziacheas White (Waycross, Ga./Ware County), and freshman Ja'Vonni O'hara (Waycross, Ga./Ware County). Curlett, White, and O'hara also ran the 100-meter dash prelims but did not race in the finals.

Also running the 200 for the Bison men was freshman Juan Colon (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) who placed 14th with a time of 22.55 as well as Daryes'e Fleming (Joppa, Md./Joppatowne) who ran a 22.88 and Shavel Lesley (Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) who clocked a 23.75. Fleming also ran the 400 where he finished 16th out of 38 with a time of 51.40.

Junior Dave Rene (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lakewood) also jumped the long jump where he finished ninth overall with a distance of 6.75 meters.

The Bison are back in action Friday, April 17 as they travel to Westerville, Ohio to compete at the Otterbein Twilight Meet hosted by Otterbein (Ohio) University at Memorial Stadium.
